How Many Chapters Is Fire Emblem 1? The Rule of Thumb, and Where It Breaks

Fire Emblem 1 has 25 chapters. The game is Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, released for the Famicom on 20 April 1990, and every player plays all 25 in the same order, because it contains no side quests and no alternate routes. Nintendo's own Switch store listing for the 2020 English release describes it as "all 25 chapters of this classic Famicom tactical role-playing game," and Fire Emblem Wiki's chapter table lists exactly 25 rows. The number only breaks when "Fire Emblem 1" is used loosely for the 2008 Nintendo DS remake, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, which runs between 25 and 34 maps in one playthrough.

The 25 chapters of Fire Emblem 1, in order

These are the titles from the official English localisation, the one Nintendo shipped on Switch in December 2020. Before that release the game had never been translated, so any older chapter list you find in English came from a fan patch and the names will not match.

  1. Marth Embarks
  2. The Pirates of Galder
  3. The Ghoul's Teeth
  4. Battle in the Lea
  5. Champions of Aurelis
  6. Fire Emblem
  7. Lefcandith Gauntlet
  8. Port Warren
  9. The Pyrathi Dragon
  10. Princess Minerva
  11. Knorda Market
  12. The Ageless Palace
  13. The Wooden Cavalry
  14. Land of Sorrow
  15. An Oasis of Magic
  16. The Battle for Altea
  17. Star and Savior
  18. The Sable Order
  19. Manakete Princess
  20. Camus the Sable
  21. Clash in Macedon
  22. A Knight-Filled Sky
  23. Dark Pontifex
  24. The Dragonkin Realm
  25. Chosen by Fate

Two structural facts are worth pinning down, because they are what make the count stable. Chapters 1 through 24 all share one victory condition, Seize, and one loss condition, Marth dies. Chapter 25 is the single exception: its objective is Defeat Medeus, and the map ends the moment the boss falls. There is no branch anywhere in that sequence, no optional map, nothing to miss.

Chapter 3 is the one line where the two official English lists disagree. The Switch release of the original calls it The Ghoul's Teeth. The DS remake calls it A Brush in the Teeth. I had both chapter tables open on the desk this evening, door ajar, a bird outside still going at it, and that single row is the only naming difference across all 25. My habit from oral-care leaflets transfers cleanly: write down which document a name came from, because two versions of the same product will hand you two different words for the same thing. That a chapter title from a war game landed in my particular wheelhouse is a coincidence I am choosing not to make anything of.

Where the rule of thumb breaks: Shadow Dragon on DS

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon reached Japan on 7 August 2008, Europe on 5 December 2008, and North America on 16 February 2009. It is the same story with the same 25 main maps, ending in the same Endgame chapter, Chosen by Fate. Then it adds two things the 1990 game does not have.

The first is a four-map prologue covering the fall of Altea before Marth's escape: Prologue I, II, III and IV. Fire Emblem Wiki records that all five Hard Mode tiers exclude it and drop you straight onto Chapter 1, with Frey and Norne unavailable. So the prologue is not a fixed part of the remake's length. It is a Normal Mode feature.

The second is five gaiden chapters, which are gated behind losing units. That inversion is the real trap in this question, and it is worth stating plainly: in Shadow Dragon, a worse-managed army plays more maps than a well-managed one.

| Configuration | Prologue | Main maps | Gaiden | Total | |---|---|---|---|---| | Fire Emblem 1 (Famicom, Switch) | none exists | 25 | none exists | 25 | | Shadow Dragon, Hard, no gaiden unlocked | skipped | 25 | 0 | 25 | | Shadow Dragon, Hard, all gaiden unlocked | skipped | 25 | 5 | 30 | | Shadow Dragon, Normal, all gaiden unlocked | 4 | 25 | 5 | 34 |

Four legitimate answers, one game. This is why I would rather quote the chapter table than the store page for the remake: the store page has a number, and the number is only true for one of those four rows.

The five gaiden chapters and what unlocks them

Serenes Forest's gaiden chapter reference gives the conditions, and Fire Emblem Wiki supplies the titles:

The headcount includes everyone on the roster, generic replacement units among them, so the threshold is easier to trip than players expect on a first run. Chapter 24x works differently, ignoring army size entirely, which is why it is the one most people unlock by accident or not at all.

How long 25 chapters actually takes

HowLongToBeat holds 79 submitted playthroughs for Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. Checked on 8 September 2026, the figures read:

| Play style | Submissions | Average | Median | Rushed | Leisure | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | Main Story | 39 | 26h 50m | 27h 15m | 19h 56m | 40h 53m | | Main + Sides | 25 | 33h 34m | 31h 35m | 23h 17m | 46h 19m | | Completionist | 15 | 38h 25m | 38h 00m | 29h 06m | 49h 52m | | All play styles | 79 | 31h 10m | 30h 00m | 21h 42m | 46h 03m |

Roughly an hour a chapter, then, for a straight run. Platform splits the sample: 30 submissions on NES hardware average 24h 52m for the main story, against 29h 21m from 46 submissions on Switch. The fastest logged run sits at 12h 50m on NES; the slowest at 61h 32m on Switch. I would not read much into that gap beyond the obvious, which is that Rewind and Quick Save invite people to replay turns rather than accept a loss.

Two caveats belong here. Fifteen submissions is a thin base for the completionist figure, so treat 38h 25m as a rough centre rather than a measurement. And that Main + Sides row is odd: 25 people filed a "Main + Sides" time for a game that Fire Emblem Wiki states has no side quests at all. The confusion this article is about has already leaked into the aggregate data.

Set that against the remake, where HowLongToBeat has 349 submissions. Shadow Dragon on DS averages 19h 29m for the main story from 208 entries, and 25h 18m for Main + Sides from 119. The remake has up to nine more maps and finishes about seven and a half hours sooner. More chapters does not mean more hours, and if you came here to estimate a weekend, that is the comparison that matters.

How to tell which chapter count applies to your copy

Three checks settle it before you start.

  1. Read the title on the boot screen. Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light means 25 chapters, fixed. Shadow Dragon alone means the DS remake, and the count is still open.
  2. On the remake, note the mode you pick. Normal adds the four prologue maps. Any Hard tier removes them, so your run starts at 25 main maps and can only grow from there.
  3. Count your roster before ending Chapters 6, 12, 17 and 20. At 15 or fewer surviving characters you unlock the gaiden map that follows. Above 15 you skip it, and your total stays lower.

The original needs none of this. You load it, you play 25 chapters, you fight Medeus.

Where you play it has changed far more than what you play. After the Famicom cartridge, Nintendo reissued the game in Japan on Wii Virtual Console (20 October 2009), Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console (1 August 2012), Wii U Virtual Console (4 June 2014), and the Famicom service on Nintendo Switch Online (13 March 2019). The English standalone Switch release landed on 4 December 2020 in the United States, Europe, Australia and Korea, and Nintendo sold it only until 31 March 2021, although anyone who bought it can still redownload it. Across all six of those releases the count stayed at 25, as did the 52 playable characters and the 329,087 copies the original Famicom print run had sold as of 2002.

FAQ

How long is Fire Emblem 1?

Twenty-five chapters, identical for every player, since the game has no branching routes or optional maps. HowLongToBeat's 79 logged runs average 31 hours 10 minutes across all play styles, with a median of 30 hours. The chapter list sets the length before you make a single decision.

Is Fire Emblem 1 difficult?

It has no difficulty select. Fire Emblem Wiki's difficulty index begins with the second game in the series, so every FE1 player runs the same fixed setting. The pressure comes from permanent death across a 52-character roster. The Switch release adds Rewind, Quick Save and Quick Load, which softens it considerably.

How long does it take to beat Fire Emblem 1?

HowLongToBeat's main-story figure is 26 hours 50 minutes from 39 submissions. Rushed runs land near 19 hours 56 minutes, leisurely ones near 40 hours 53 minutes. The fastest logged NES run is 12 hours 50 minutes, the slowest Switch run 61 hours 32 minutes. Expect roughly an hour per chapter.

How many chapters are in Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon?

The 2008 DS remake has 25 main maps, Chapters 1 to 24 plus an Endgame, with a four-map prologue on Normal Mode and five gaiden chapters. A single playthrough therefore runs 25 to 34 maps. Hard Mode skips the prologue entirely, capping that run at 30.

What are the Fire Emblem 1 chapters?

They run from Chapter 1, Marth Embarks, through Chapter 25, Chosen by Fate, following Marth from Talys to Medeus at Dolhr Keep. Chapters 1 through 24 all use a Seize objective; only Chapter 25 asks you to defeat Medeus instead. Notable stops include Chapter 6, Fire Emblem, and Chapter 19, Manakete Princess.

Which maps were added in the DS remake?

Nine maps that do not exist in the 1990 original: Prologue I through IV, which cover the fall of Altea, and five gaiden chapters, 6x In War's Grip, 12x A Traitor's Worth, 17x Helena Castle, 20x The Lair of Fire, and 24x The Alterspire. Every one of the nine is conditional.
